KIDS PLUS unites communities
and generations

At first glance, it is not obvious how alike Leola Rodd and Emily Matlack are, besides the fact that both live in Carlton, MN. Leola is a strong pillar of the community who has served Carlton for many years in a variety of roles, including her current post as mayor. Emily is a sophomore at Carlton High School with a bright smile and a soft voice.

KIDS PLUS is their common ground:  Leola, as Carlton’s KIDS PLUS coordinator starting in 1998, and young Emily as an active KIDS PLUS participant. Emily, as a youth board member with Minnesota Power Foundation Youth In Philanthropy—a Northland Foundation KIDS PLUS Program, and Leola as an adult board representative guiding the young grantmakers.

Through their shared KIDS PLUS experiences, each has been part of Carlton’s annual clean-up day, holiday toy drive, chemical health week, and more. Youth In Philanthropy brings them together again. Leola is sharing her leadership experience with the 16 teenaged board members. Emily is honing her leadership potential, as she moves from Vice Chair to Chair this year.

In the end, what truly unites Emily and Leola is their ageless enthusiasm for giving back to their community!
