The KIDS PLUS Program is dedicated to improving the wellbeing of children and youth, from birth to adulthood, and connecting the generations through an array of community-based initiatives.
In downtown McGregor, in rural Aitkin County, a new child care business is blossoming. Karina Olson worked at the bank but dreamt of running her own child care business. When she saw the building across the street for lease, she got busy. Between November 2016 and February 2017, Olson had the building fully renovated, became licensed, and opened her doors.
A Northland Foundation grant with funds provided by the State of Minnesota aimed at child care expansion helped Olson with start-up expenses. “Many toys were donated, but there were major expenses like the outside play area that I couldn’t afford on my own,” she explained.
The outside area is beautifully finished with soft mulch underfoot, a new swing set, and age appropriate options for young children. The inside of the building is just as nice, including a full kitchen, a big play area, and lots of toys.
Little Beginnings is licensed for 10 children. Balancing part-time clients, Karina cares for about 20 altogether and has a waiting list that is months long. McGregor, like small towns all over the region, has far more demand for child care than openings.
“I had a vision and went for it. I appreciate the Northland Foundation helping me get there,” said Olson.
