This keynote presentation will introduce a new framework for Intergenerational Trauma (IGT) and will highlight how parents’ strengths and strategies help buffer their children from trauma. Dr. Thomas will share results of a study that broke new ground as one of the first to describe the prevalence of IGT, one of the first to explore parent traits as potential reducers of IGT, and one of the first to describe how our society inflicts trauma on families. The presentation will emphasize the importance of learning from the families we work with, and will offer practical suggestions for collaborating with parents to promote healing and safety.
