Fall 2009
For nearly a decade, students in grades eight through twelve from across northeastern Minnesota have had the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the art of giving and the importance of civic engagement. Board members review grant proposals and make real funding decisions. Young people are selected from among the 26 KIDS PLUS Communities, on a rotating basis, and invited to participate on the board. Since 2000, the Youth in Philanthropy program has awarded nearly $160,000 to youth-led projects in the region.
2009-2010 Youth In Philanthropy participants
enjoyed bowling following their first meeting.
This year's board is made up of 16 students in grades 8 through 12 who represent schools in the following communities: Esko, Duluth, Floodwood, Deer River, Chisholm, Superior, Hill City, and Two Harbors.
Adult representatives providing guidance to the board are Chris Langenbrunner, Director, Two Harbors Community Education; Sara Liimatainen, Director, Cloquet Community Education; Kelli Millslagle, Financial Analyst, Minnesota Power-an ALLETE Company; and Tim Stratioti, Branch Director, Boys & Girls Club of the Northland.
The 2009-2010 board members began their year with a training session. Following the training, a bowling and pizza outing helped young board members from far-flung communities get to know one another and their adult advisors in a relaxed setting.
The next Youth in Philanthropy grant application deadline is January 1, 2010. Visit our web site for more information on the application process.
This program is supported by the Northland Foundation with additional support from longtime partner, the Minnesota Power Foundation.
