If you ask someone who is 80+ years old what they want in life, you will get any number of answers: independence, companionship, staying busy, privacy, activity, quiet time ... Each person is unique, and that doesn’t change as we age! Respect for individual choice is core to the person-centered movement in elder care.
Last December, the Northland Foundation’s assisted living initiative, Northland Village, unveiled a new logo with the tagline, "Yes you can!" to reflect the person-centered philosophy being embraced at our locations in the small towns of McGregor, Buhl, and Hoyt Lakes.
“Residents want to and should be supported to live life on their terms, and that is what we empower our staff to do,” explained Brad Sandnas, Director of Assisted Living.
“Mary can get up and eat breakfast early, and Ken can sleep in and eat a little later. Residents can join in whatever group activities they want, play a game with a staff member, or relax quietly on their own. It’s totally up to the resident.”

Staffing at Northland Village has evolved with this approach. During the day, each 10-suite cottage will typically have one direct care team member scheduled at a time, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, which offers more predictability and comfort for the residents.
All three locations have a dedicated Kitchen Coordinator and kitchen assistants with the all-important job of fixing delicious, home-cooked meals that meet a variety of tastes.

Likewise, Health & Wellness Coordinators focus their energy organizing all types of activities, visits, entertainment, outings, and events, with the residents providing input about what they want to do next.
“Our staff teams are doing a great job of meeting every resident where they are at and encouraging them to live life to the fullest,” said Sandnas.
Respect for each individual is the cornerstone of person-centered care and the spirit of Northland Village Assisted Living values.
