Funding partners support programming to address critical needs in Northeast Minnesota

Minnesota Power Foundation funds Youth In Philanthropy grantmaking for 2017-2018


Minnesota Power Foundation Youth In PhilanthropyThe Minnesota Power Foundation, longtime partners in promoting leadership, philanthropy, and volunteer experience among young people in the region, has approved a $25,000 grant to the Youth In Philanthropy Program. These funds will be awarded by youth, for youth during the 2017-2018 school year. The Youth In Philanthropy board is comprised of 7th through 12th grade students from across the region, guided by adult mentors that include a representative from Minnesota Power. The board reviews grant applications and makes funding decisions that award up to $1,000 each to school and community projects led by young people with the support of adult advisors.

“The Minnesota Power Foundation has generously provided $367,713 in funding through the years, that has supported 444 youth-driven projects,” stated Tony Sertich, President of the Northland Foundation. “Their continued investment in this program will empower thousands of children and youth to improve their communities and develop valuable lifelong skills.”


Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation grants $100,000 for Parent Aware Pathways


Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation logoThe Northland Foundation has received a second year of funding from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation to help support our Parent Aware Pathways Initiative. The $100,000 grant will help young children in our rural region to be better prepared for school and life by increasing access to, and availability of, high-quality early care and education settings in their communities.

“The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation has been a strong partner in our efforts to assist licensed providers to earn or maintain a Parent Aware rating. Their support has helped us reach a state-leading 32 percent of child care programs that are Parent Aware-rated or in the process of becoming rated here in northeastern Minnesota,” said Lynn Haglin, Vice President/KIDS PLUS Director of the Northland Foundation.


Sheltering Arms Foundation grant to boost support for child care providers seeking licensure

has awarded $20,000 to implement a new facet of the Northland Foundation’s Parent Aware Pathways Initiative aimed at helping address the acute shortage of child care programs in northeastern Minnesota. The funding will help the Northland Foundation assist people in northeastern Minnesota to become licensed as child care providers and earn a Parent Aware rating.

“The Northland Foundation greatly values our longstanding relationship with The Sheltering Arms Foundation and their continued commitment to help children thrive and reach their full potential,” said Lynn Haglin, Vice President/KIDS PLUS Director.


Otto Bremer Trust grant supports AGE to age expansion

Otto Bremer Trust logoThe Otto Bremer Trust recently awarded $75,000 for Northland's AGE to age: bringing generations together initiative. This funding will provide training, technical assistance, and financial support to sustain intergenerational initiatives that benefit children, youth, and elders in the communities of Aitkin, McGregor, International Falls, and Bois Forte Reservation to build friendships across age groups and enhance their community.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with the Otto Bremer Trust. Their support has been vital to the advancement of AGE to age, from its early stages to what is now a nationally recognized model for excellence in intergenerational programming,” stated Lynn Haglin, Northland Foundation Vice President/KIDS PLUS Director.
