Recent grants invest more than $250,000 in projects and programs of nonprofits, Tribal Nations, and school districts

From January through March, the Northland Foundation awarded two dozen grants totaling $246,830 to nonprofit organizations, schools, and Tribal Nations within the region.

A number of these grants supported a variety programs aimed at children and youth and/or connecting the older and younger generations. For example, a $14,000 grant will support a summer jobs program for Iron Range area young people; $25,000 for programming to connect youth with elders in Grand Portage; $1,000 to help host a mentoring day for high school students with disabilities and their parents; $25,000 for programs serving children whose families are in transitional housing; and $1,000 to provide environmental education for 6th grade students in Aitkin County.

In addition to the 24 grants approved by the staff and Board of Trustees, another four grants totaling $4,000 were awarded by the KIDS PLUS Youth In Philanthropy (YIP) Board. The 2018-2019 Board includes 15 high school students from Cloquet, Duluth, Ely, Hibbing, McGregor, Moose Lake, and Superior, WI, and four adult mentors provide guidance. The young people review the YIP applications and award up to $1,000 each to youth-driven projects.

Valley Youth Centers, Duluth


To support after-school programming for youth in the Gary New Duluth neighborhood.

Aitkin County Environmental Services, Aitkin


To support environmental education programming for Aitkin County 6th grade students.

Minnesota Youth Intervention Programs Association, Ham Lake


To support professional development programming for youth development workers in northeastern Minnesota.
