Roy Smith 1963-2025
Our board chair and friend, Roy Smith, has died
We are heartbroken to share the news that our board chair, Roy Smith, passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Those who knew Roy know how much he loved his family, his work, and our region.
He contributed greatly to the foundation’s impact over the past six years as a trustee, treasurer, and most recently as chair of our board. Even before his board tenure, he was a frequent partner and supporter of our initiatives. We are so fortunate to have known him and benefited by his leadership.

Roy was the best of us; he tackled everything with joy, humor, and Iron Range determination. He had a unique job working for both the IRRR and Minnesota North College – at the same time. Over the years he held many titles, primarily focused on workforce or talent development. But Roy’s main talent was that of a connector.
Though almost always behind the scenes, he was the glue that got things done. Roy put a premium on getting to know people and cultivating relationships. He leaves a legacy of goodwill and accomplishments that will live on through the lives of the people he touched and countless others who may never know the role Roy played in making our region better.
Our thoughts are with his wife, Suzy, and daughter, Cheyenne, whom he loved so much. We hold them—and his whole family—in our thoughts.
You can find Roy’s obituary here.
