The Grant Program provides financial and technical resources to nonprofits within the seven-county Arrowhead Region. Support is directed toward three areas of interest to help individuals, families, and communities to grow and thrive. These three priority areas are: Connecting Kids and Communities/Strengthening Families, Opportunities for Self-Reliance, and Aging with Independence. In fiscal year 2008-2009, the Northland Foundation awarded 196 grants totaling $977,897.
Shannon and her Circle of Support allies have forged strong bonds as she works toward improving life for herself and her family.
Poverty is an exhausting business.
If your car breaks down and you can’t afford repairs, how do you get to work? If you’re the first person in your family to attend college, will you be able to complete the intimidating maze of financial aid paperwork? If your child gets strep throat and needs antibiotics, which will you sacrifice this week to pay for it: heat or food?
Where do you turn for help if everyone you know is in the same boat?
Circles of Support is designed to break the wearying, isolating cycle of poverty. Participants form new relationships that become a personal support network as they develop their plan to increase the money, meaning, and friendship in their lives – critical forms of social capital that the middle class takes for granted. This relationship-based model has been piloted and successfully implemented in Duluth as well as Itasca County for nearly five years.
Each “circle” consists of one participant and two to four allies – volunteers from the community who cross racial, cultural, and socio-economic lines to befriend a participant and their family. Regular circle meetings, larger group meetings, and other resources provided by Community Action Duluth and KOOTASCA Community Action support each circle in following their plan to move out of poverty.
Those plans may be to continue their education, find a better-paying job, get out of debt, and end reliance on welfare. But in order to achieve the big goals, participants must navigate myriad little steps: securing regular transportation and child care, learning proper interview and job etiquette, and more, all while managing the daily challenges of making ends meet.
It is the experience of having a reliable, invested group of friends that makes Circles of Support so unique. The relationships that are formed enrich the lives of both participant and ally, as one volunteer ally explains when asked about her match with Shannon.
“It has been exciting to make a plan then watch as Shannon accomplishes each goal. Our Circle will end in twelve months, but this friendship will continue. What we’ve discovered is that the 'experience' remains; nothing can take away the experience.”
