During the past year, the Northland Foundation's Grant Program awarded 174 grants totaling $936,075 as well as technical resources to nonprofits that address the priority areas of Connecting Kids and Communities/ Strengthening Families, Opportunities for Self-Reliance, and Aging with Independence.
Through a MN Job Skills Training SOAR opportunity,
a client attends a Manufacturing class at Lake Superior
College.
Project SOAR opened its doors in 1980 aiming to serve displaced homemakers who were entering the workforce. Much has changed in the three decades since. The Duluth-based nonprofit has adjusted to the times yet held fast to its core mission of providing job readiness and training to the underserved.
Renamed SOAR Career Solutions in 2006, its clientele is now far more diverse, ranging from the legions of laid-off workers seeking new skill sets to ex-offenders for whom getting and keeping a job eases their reentry into society and reduces their risk of reoffending. Their employment readiness programs help clients explore their interests and refine their job-hunting abilities. Hands-on training prepares them for entry level positions in a variety of fields. Positive outcomes hinge on self-confidence and soft skills as much as learning a trade.
The Northland Foundation has a long history of grant support for the vital human services SOAR provides. That relationship continues today with SOAR’s participation in Northland’s Strengthening Communities Initiative, which extends technical assistance as well as cash grants to build internal capacity and sustainability.
More unexpected: SOAR is not only a grantee but also a borrower with a line of credit through the Northland Foundation’s Business Finance Program.
“Reimbursement-style grants mean we have to pay expenses upfront while waiting for quarterly checks from our funders. This line of credit affords us an added measure of fiscal security,” states Ellenson.
SOAR’s evolution has meant growing pains and a re-girding of their internal systems to equip themselves for increased demand and new directions.
“We were in a growth period when the recession hit. Demand for our career development workshops increased dramatically as more people found themselves out of work, Ellenson elaborates.
“Fortunately, we were able to secure additional program funding – including a grant for job training programming from the Northland Foundation – and expand our services to meet the community need.”
