About the Program

The MYALP is an intensive, three-and-a-half day program held at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. It convenes rising Minnesota leaders from for-profit, government, and non-profit sectors, who are committed to helping their communities and region prosper inclusively.

Participants will 1) develop and enhance their ability to forge connections with other rising leaders across and within Minnesota’s cities and regions, 2) deepen their knowledge and share perspectives regarding the state and the trajectory of our national and regional economic development, and 3) learn together from examples of and tools for innovative cross-sector collaborations that address key challenges, create opportunities, and bridge divides in our communities.

Participants also have the opportunity collaborate after the Program to develop and potentially launch an initiative for public good and to build a broader capacity by deepening their practical knowledge of what it takes to make shared leadership initiatives happen.

Program Themes include:

  • The State and Trajectory of U.S. and Minnesota Economies: Insights and Examples
  • Cross Sector Leadership: Insights and Examples
  • Building Future Collaborations for our Region
  • Leadership Chats: The View from the Trenches

Background

Since 2015, the Itasca Project has sent cohorts of ten rising leaders to Harvard Business School (HBS) for the Young American Leaders Program. In 2019, the Itasca Project collaborated with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Integrative Leadership to create the Minnesota Young American Leaders Program (MYALP) which is inspired by the national Young American Leaders Program. The two programs share themes, as well as selected faculty and content.

MYALP convenes every May, bringing together rising leaders from six regions in Minnesota: Northeast Minnesota, Greater Fargo-Moorhead, Greater Mankato, Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul, Greater Rochester, and Greater St. Cloud. A selection committee for each region works to select a balanced cohort that represents the rich and particular diversity of our region and state. We plan to have cohorts identified by mid-February 2025.
