Joe and Nancy Sertich

The Iron Range town of Chisholm is where high school sweethearts Nancy and Joe Sertich grew up, married, raised children, and still live. Both had long careers as teachers, with Joe later working in college administration.

“The issues that matter to us align with what the Northland Foundation does,” explained Nancy. “As a former K-12 teacher, I’m especially excited about their work in early childhood and child care. It’s so important.”

The Sertich’s legacy gift to the Northland Foundation reflects their love for northeastern Minnesota and for helping people achieve a brighter, more secure future. The couple purchased a life insurance policy in the Foundation’s name. They make a modest, tax-deductible donation that covers the cost of the annual premium now. Upon their deaths, the policy will provide a significant gift.

Joe, who served on Northland’s Board from 1996 to 2005, said of their choice: “I want the Foundation to continue to grow. That takes money. An insurance policy is such an easy, affordable way to give. Imagine if 100 more people did the same!”

“We need to find ways to meet the challenges and build on all the good things in our rural area. I’m happy our gift will contribute to that,” concluded Nancy.
